On this Mother’s Day, we turn to Scripture for wisdom on motherhood’s sacred calling. God’s design for mothers reveals itself throughout His Word, not in ornate language, but in truth.
In Proverbs 31:25-28, we read of the worthy woman: “Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come. She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. She looks well to the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children rise up and call her blessed.“
God established motherhood as a reflection of His nurturing character. When Isaiah 66:13 says, “As one whom his mother comforts, so I will comfort you,” God uses maternal love to help us understand divine compassion.
Timothy’s faith journey began with his mother and grandmother. “I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well” (2 Timothy 1:5). This generational faithfulness showcases mothers as spiritual pillars.
Moses’ mother Jochebed risked everything to preserve her son’s life. Hannah dedicated Samuel to God’s service. Mary submitted to God’s will despite uncertainty: “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word” (Luke 1:38).
Today, Christian mothers continue this legacy through prayer, teaching Scripture, modeling faith, and creating homes where God’s presence dwells.
As we honor mothers today, let us acknowledge their God-given role in nurturing not just bodies, but souls. May we support them through prayer, encouragement, and practical help as they fulfill their divine calling.
“Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: ‘Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all.” (Proverbs 31:28-29)
