Everything important in life has a starting place. A journey begins with the first step, a house begins with its foundation, and a story begins with its opening line. In our walk with God, the starting place is prayer.
Mark 1:35 tells us that Jesus rose early in the morning, went to a solitary place, and prayed. He began His day with prayer. This was not by accident. It was not a small habit tucked in when there was extra time. It was the foundation of His ministry and the wellspring of His strength. Before miracles, before teaching, before the crowds pressed in, He went first to the Father.
When prayer becomes the starting place, it changes everything. The weight of decisions feels lighter because I know they are not mine alone to carry. The frustrations of the day find their balance because I have already laid them before the Lord. Even joy feels deeper because I am reminded that it comes from Him and not from fleeting moments.
Scripture echoes this truth again and again. Philippians 4:6 says, “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.” Prayer is not our last resort; it is meant to be our first response.
I have often found that when I rush past prayer, I end up leaning on my own strength. And that strength runs out quickly. But when I begin with God, the day has a different tone. There is peace, even if the circumstances are difficult. There is clarity, even if the decisions are hard. Prayer becomes the anchor that steadies me.
The starting place is not about a perfect routine or the right words. It is about posture. It is about coming to God first, before anything else, with a heart that seeks Him. Like Jesus, who rose early to pray, we can learn to shape our days around the presence of the Father.
So when I think about where to begin, I come back to this truth: the starting place is always prayer.
