Strength That Never Fails

Isaiah 40:28–31

Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding.

He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength.

Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall:

But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

Isaiah speaks to a weary people, exiled, broken, and uncertain of the future. His words begin with a question meant to awaken memory: “Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard?” It is as if the prophet is calling Israel to remember what they already know deep within the character of God. He is everlasting, the Creator of the ends of the earth. Unlike man, He does not grow tired, nor does He lose interest. His wisdom cannot be measured or exhausted.

Our world which is in constant motion makes it easy to imagine that even God must become weary of humanity’s failings. Isaiah reminds us that His strength is not like ours. He does not fade with time or strain under the weight of our prayers. When we are spent, He remains steady. When we are confused, His understanding remains infinite.

The beauty of this passage lies not only in the description of God’s strength, but in what He does with it. He shares it. “He giveth power to the faint.” The God who never tires bends low to strengthen those who do. Divine strength is not reserved for the mighty or self-sufficient; it is given to those who admit their weakness.

Every believer reaches a moment when resolve runs thin and faith feels small. Yet God’s answer is not condemnation, but renewal. His grace does not merely patch up our strength it transforms it. The weak become strong, not by self-will, but through the quiet trust of waiting.

To wait upon the Lord is not passive idleness. It is a posture of expectancy and trust, a steady gaze toward the One who knows what we do not. It means continuing in prayer, holding to faith, even when answers delay.

Those who learn this waiting find their souls lifted. “They shall mount up with wings as eagles.” The eagle soars not by frantic motion but by resting on unseen currents of air. In the same way, believers rise above despair by trusting in the invisible strength of God.

Isaiah’s promise moves through a rhythm of life: to fly, to run, to walk. There are seasons of soaring victory, seasons of hurried labor, and seasons where all we can do is keep walking. In each, God’s strength meets us exactly where we are.

Everlasting Hope

This passage closes not with a command but with a promise, an assurance that endurance is possible through divine power. The world tells us to “find strength within,” but Isaiah points higher: true renewal comes from the Lord who never grows weary.

For anyone standing in a season of exhaustion or uncertainty, Isaiah 40:28–31 is more than ancient poetry. It is a reminder that the everlasting God still gives strength to the faint, still renews those who wait, and still lifts the hearts of His people until they too can soar again.
