When You Feel Forgotten by God

Holding on to Hope – A Devotional from Psalm 13

“How long wilt thou forget me, O Lord? for ever? how long wilt thou hide thy face from me?”

—Psalm 13:1 (KJV)

There are seasons in life when it feels like heaven is silent. Prayers seem to float into the void, unanswered. The burden of sorrow grows heavier, and hope begins to slip through weary hands. In those moments, it’s easy to wonder:

Has God forgotten me?

You’re not alone. David—the man after God’s own heart—asked that same question.

📖 A Cry from the Depths – Psalm 13

Psalm 13 is only six verses long, but in those few lines, David gives voice to the deep ache many believers know all too well:

  • “How long shall I take counsel in my soul, having sorrow in my heart daily?” (v. 2)

  • “Consider and hear me, O Lord my God…” (v. 3)

David isn’t afraid to be honest with God. His psalm begins in anguish, but it doesn’t end there.

🌤️ The Turning Point – Trust Despite Silence

In verses 5 and 6, we see a shift:

“But I have trusted in thy mercy; my heart shall rejoice in thy salvation. I will sing unto the Lord, because he hath dealt bountifully with me.”

David chooses to trust God’s character even when he can’t see His hand. The circumstances haven’t changed—but his heart has.

🪔 What to Do When You Feel Forgotten

  1. Pour Out Your Heart Honestly

Don’t be afraid to tell God what you feel. He already knows. He welcomes the real you—not the polished version.

  2. Anchor Yourself in Truth

When emotions roar like waves, cling to what you know: God is faithful, merciful, and near—even when He seems far.

  3. Remember Past Faithfulness

David reminds himself, “He hath dealt bountifully with me.” Reflect on moments when God has shown up. His past provision is proof He hasn’t abandoned you.

  4. Worship While You Wait

Singing in the silence is an act of defiant faith. It lifts your eyes off the valley and onto the Shepherd.

💛 A Final Thought

If today you feel forgotten, know this:

You are seen.

You are loved.

You are held, even when it doesn’t feel like it.

God may be silent, but He is not absent. Like David, you can bring your sorrow, and still end in song.

“I will sing unto the Lord, because he hath dealt bountifully with me.”

—Psalm 13:6

Suggested Prayer:

Lord, when I feel forgotten, help me remember who You are. Remind me of Your mercy, strengthen my trust, and teach me to sing even in the silence.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
